Puri: Eight patients, who died in the fire mishap at SUM Hospital in Bhubaneswar Monday evening, were cremated at Swargadwar here Tuesday. The last rites of Latika Dash (Bhimtangi, Bhubaneswar), Manaswini Sarangi (Jankia, Khurda), Ashok Sahu (Samantarapur), Rajani Patra (Nachuni, Khurda), P Kalyani Patra (Budhaamba, Ganjam), Nimaicharan Nayak (Bhubaneswar) and Sulochana Parida (Bhubaneswar) were conducted in the presence of their family members.
Bodies started reaching Swargadwar for the last rites from 6am and by 10am there were seven corpses. However, district administration officials reached the spot very late, alleged kin of the deceased. Some local volunteers and social activists were seen consoling the near and dear ones of the deceased. Deputy collector Madhusudan Dash, tehsildar Subhakanta Mohapatra and municipality enforcement officer Abhimanyu Behera reached three hours after six bodies has been cremated.
Some of the victims’ family members, who broke down before mediapersons, questioned the promptness of hospital authorities and other officials in the rescue operation at SUM Hospital Monday. Man said that some of the patients could have been saved if measures had been taken on time.
No politician was seen at Swargadwar even though eight bodies were cremated here after the horrific fire mishap.
