Bhubaneswar: As many as 9,390 people have lost their jobs due to closure of 17 industrial units between 2010 and 2018. This was informed by Industries Minister Dibya Shankar Mishra in a written statement to the Assembly.
According to his statement, the highest of 3,350 workers were affected due to the closure of Vedanta’s Lanjigarh unit. The unit was closed in June 2013, he said.
Similarly, 964 people have lost their jobs due to the closure of Orissa Sponge Iron Ltd. The industry was shut down in July 2012 due to unavailability of raw materials and low market price.
The minister said 904 workers were affected due to shutdown of Raghunath Paper Mills, 800 due to closing down of Maheswari Ispat Ltd and 500 due to closure of George Distributors Pvt Ltd.
The other major industries, which have closed down their shutters in past 18 years, include IRC Tubes (427 people affected), Jain Steel & Power Ltd (286), Deepak Steel & Power Ltd (469), Shiva Shakti Sponge Iron Ltd (110), Pawanjay Sponge Iron Ltd (119) and Ganesh Sponge iron ltd (110).
During the eight years (from 2010 to March 2018), 95 industries have started partial or full capacity functioning in the state. These industries have promised to provide employment to 1,66,613 persons with a total investment of Rs 2.91 lakh crore, he added.
