Baliguda: Vehicular movement came to a standstill in parts of Kandhamal district Wednesday after Maoists caused road blockades by dumping huge trees on the main roads. The action was in protest over the police encounter in which seven red rebels were killed in the state. The blockades were lifted after police intervention.
The Maoists cut down huge trees and dumped them on the main roads. Communication on the road was disrupted mainly in Kotpada and Muniguda areas off Baliguda in Kandhamal district.
In a poster put up by members of Bansadhara-Ghumasara-Nagabali (BGN) division, the Maoists condemned the killing of Maoists in recent police encounters in Sudurkumpa in Kandhamal district and Barakamal in Balangir district.
The ultras warned that such action against them would not be tolerated. After receiving information, police reached the spot. After some time, trees and branches were removed and the traffic movement restored.
Tuesday, Maoists killed villager Jagdish Somrath on suspicion of being an informer of police at Temurapalli village near Mathili in Malkangiri district. Some 15-30 armed Maoists barged into Jagdish’s house, forcibly took him to Katapalli and killed him by slitting his throat.
Maoists issued another poster in the name of Kanger Ghati Area Committee of Maoists before fleeing the spot of this killing. The poster warned the villagers of dire consequences if they passed on any information of the Maoist activities to the police.
