Bhubaneswar: The World Music Day, also known as Fete de la Musique in France, is the most awaited day for music lovers across the globe. It is said that former French Minister of Culture Jack Lang conceived the idea of World Music Day in 1982 and it is been celebrated in 32 countries globally since then.
The day sheds light on the importance of music and how it helps people to connect across borders. Various musicians perform for free and showcase the power of music on this day.
Utkal University of Culture, Madanpur, celebrated this day Thursday with much sprightliness. Gracing the occasion as the guest of honour, Odissi guru and scholar Ramhari Das stressed on the importance of music and how young musicians should try and keep classical music alive through learning and regular practice. He also spoke about the role of music in our day-to-day life with a special focus on music in Odisha. Prof. Kuanr spoke about the damages caused by plagiarism.
Jabahar Mishra presented a flute recital on the occasion, while Suman and Prof accompanied him on harmonium and mardal respectively.
Odisha Sangeet Natak Academi and Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi Research Center jointly observed the World Music Day at Bhanja Kala Mandap. Speaking on the occasion, veteran singer Shyamamani Patnaik stressed on the need to maintain the originality of Odissi classical music. In his address, classical music researcher Sunil Satpathy said, “These days every other person claims to be a musician, but learning a few songs doesn’t make one a singer. Only devotion and dedication helps one to become a true singer”.
Later, a musical programme was organised to mark the day. Odissi vocal by Achuyat Maharana, Hindustani vocals by Auroshis Pani and Sangeeta Panda left the audience enthralled. Siddhartha Mishra and Antara Chakravarthy rendered light Indian music on the occasion. The main attraction of the evening was Jhoomar (folk song) by Bindulata Mahanto and Desia Geet by Sailabhama Mohapatra.
A special musical evening on Chhanda was organised by Bhubaneswar Music Circle at Rabindra Mandap late in the evening.
