Palembang: It was a good day for India at the Jakarta Asian Games as they picked up a couple of gold medals in addition to a silver and four bronze, Friday. The squash contingent also assured three medals with three players reaching the semifinals of the individual events.
India swelled their gold tally by finishing atop the podium in men’s rowing quadruple sculls and men’s doubles in tennis. The quartet of Sawarn Singh, Dattu Baban Bhokanal, Sukhmeet Singh and Om Prakash won the 1000m event. Dushyant Chauhan then won a men’s singles bronze in men’s singles sculls while Bhagwan Singh and Rohit Kumar finished third in the men’s doubles sculls to make it a fruitful day in rowing.
Top seeds Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan also had the Tricolour fluttering by winning their final 6-3, 6-4 against the Kazakhstan combo of Aleksander Bublik and Denis Yevseyev in a match that lasted 52 minutes.
However, kabaddi woes continued as the Indian women finished second best to Iran and had to be satisfied with the silver. It was a huge upset as the ‘Women in Blue’ were firm favourites going into the tournament. Heena Sidhu then ended her Asian Games medal drought with a bronze in the 10m air pistol event.
