BHUBANESWAR: The second Friday of October is celebrated as World Egg Day across the globe. It was founded by the International Egg Commission (IEC) at a conference held in Vienna in 1996 and from that very year world egg day is celebrated worldwide. This year world egg day falls on October 12.
The idea behind the day was raising awareness regarding the importance of eggs in human nutrition. When we think of the egg, a definitive clear image of a white shelled oval structure containing white slimy emissions with a golden yellow rounded mass comes to our mind. We are also very much known to its countless advantages. The history of the egg expands far beyond a merely culinary concern. In fact, it has a great importance in multiple cultures for reasons both decorative and religious. Easter egg is one such example.
India is the third largest producer of eggs with an annual production of 57 billion eggs. Only Odisha and Jharkhand contribute 13% of the total egg production in India.
In Odisha, the day is celebrated in all district headquarters of the state to popularize egg consumption. Debate, essay competitions are conducted among school children at the district level for creating awareness on eggs in daily life.
Assistant Project officer of OPOLFED Sagarika Mishra said, “Egg consumption is very peaking in states like Odisha. At present, OPOLFED’s marketing activities, such as supply of eggs and chicken meat are being carried out in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack through 73 OPOLFED sales booths. Apart from this, OPOLFED has its own outlets at Saheed Nagar, IRC Village, OUAT Campus & Chandrasekharpur in Bhubaneswar. Health conscious consumers are getting scientifically processed fresh and hygienic meat from these outlets within 10 minutes of placing order.”
