Bhubaneswar, Dec 11: Residents of the temple city will soon be able to see the skeleton of the 32-feet giant Sperm whale that had floated ashore near the Beleswar river mouth and died December 3.
The bones of the giant mammal have been collected by the eight-member team of experts of the Regional Museum of Natural History (RMNH).
It took the experts almost four days to extract the bones, with the slicing of the dead whale that started Monday finishing Thursday. “I, along with seven other zoologists from RMNH, camped here since Monday. The operation on the whale finished around 2 pm Thursday and we are now heading to Bhubaneswar,” said Shiva Prasad Parida, a zoologist at RMNH.
The RMNH will put the skeleton of the Sperm whale on show next month. “The bones have been collected. However, it will be processed and it will take another month for it to be put on show. People will probably be able to see the whale next month,” said Parida.
The bones are that of an adult whale, according to the zoologist. “Ageing might be a reason for the death of this whale, but after an examination the veterinary surgeons will reveal the exact reason of death,” said Parida.
The Sperm whale has been kept near Keuntajangha for about six days after which the experts came and collected bones from it.
