BHUBANESWAR: Cinema lovers of the city will get the chance to watch versatile and critically acclaimed movies at the 10th edition of India Film Festival Bhubaneswar starting Thursday.
The seven-day festival that is scheduled to continue till January 30, 2019 will showcase more than 66 movies at the festival. This apart, 20 movies by the students would also be screened at the event. These movies were selected from 75 films received, in more than 15 Indian languages.
Out of the received movies, 20 have been shortlisted for the festival. Out of these, 10 are in competition, which will compete for the top prizes of the festival. “These films deal with contemporary concerns of social, cultural and political significance, and some of them boast of formal and stylistic virtuoso in cinema,” said Subrat Beura, secretary, FSB.
These films come from a range of institutes, starting from FTII, Pune, NID, Ahmedabad, FTI, Itanagar, SRFTI, Kolkata, KN National Institute of Visual Sciences and Arts, Kottayam to non-formal schools like the University of Mumbai, Jadavpur University, Kolkata and Delhi School of Economics. The winners in the competition shall be felicitated in the closing ceremony of the festival.
This apart on the first day of the festival five movies will be screened. These films include Bhayanakam, a Malayalam movie directed by Jayaraj, The Young Karl Marx, a German movie directed by Raoul Peck, Toni Erdmann, another German movie directed by Maren Ade.
On the first day Shaji Karun, noted Malayalam film maker, will grace the opening ceremony along with other dignitaries, his films will be screened under the Indian Masters Section. The festival will showcase his debut movie Piravi (1988).
