Bhubaneswar: A rare case of rupture of inflated abdominal artery in a 23-year-old girl from the city was successfully operated upon and cured by a panel of doctors from the city with the active support of the Odisha State Treatment Fund of the Odisha government.
The condition, medically termed as Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, is sometimes found in elders, diabetics and other high risk people but is hardly observed among youths. However, in the present case a 28-year-old girl diagnosed with the ailment was said to reach the hospital in city unconscious with her ruptured abdominal artery.
A panel of doctors at the BR Kalinga Hospital in the city which handled the case claimed that it is the first of this kind of case in Odisha which has also been treated successfully and the patient is likely to be discharged by Thursday. The surgery cost of the procedure is said to be upto Rs 8 lakh but the state treatment fund took care of the medical expenses for the high risk surgery, doctors said.
“This is a rare case for a person in her 20s. The risk in this case is very high. More than half of the people under such conditions die post rupture and only few are able to make it to the hospital. The ailment poses a serious threat to life. However, in this case, with quick response and with minimal invasive medical aid we successfully treated the patient,” said Dr Sibasankar Dalai, the doctor who operated upon her.
Another doctor, Dr Sushant Shaila who was among the panel of doctors who treated her said, “This could be the first time in Odisha where we successfully performed emergency Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm rupture surgery. The patient was brought to the hospital unconscious. The surgery was conducted immediately as the rupture was severe post diagnosis, which, if delayed, may have been catastrophic.”
An aortic aneurysm is a condition of ballooning of a blood vessel, usually in an artery, due to weakness or degeneration that develops in a portion of the artery wall. It is normally said to show no symptoms but may have expansion and contraction with strong regular movements near the navel.
