BHUBANESWAR: Regional Museum of Natural History organised a painting and poster-making competition to commemorate International Earth Day here Sunday.
Around 150 students from various schools of the city participated in the competition which was aimed at inspiring people to protect Mother Nature by recycling more, using solar power and planting trees among others.
Interacting with Orissa Post, Gaurav, Head, Regional Museum of Natural History, said, “It’s a national-level competition and the winner will be sent to the finals in New Delhi. The aim of the competition is to send messages across to neitizens about their wrong doing for environment.”
Suraj Tripathy of Sainik School said, “I am here to draw my painting for International Earth Day. I am sure it will be appreciated by my school authorities as well as the authorities over here.”
An environmentalist Jaykrushna Panigrahi said, “Earth is losing its sheen due to our ignorance. Mother Earth is crying out and the results are shown in the form of extreme weathers. There is no point in celebrating Earth Day if we don’t realise the damage we are doing to the planet on the pretext of living a modern life.
An animal activist Seema Choudhury said, “This year, the theme of World Earth Day is to protect various species. However, we are destroying our wildlife beyond imagination. It’s high time for our people to wake up from their slumber and start doing worthwhile activities like saving trees and keeping water sources clean.”
