Joda: A dumper ran over a minor boy near KMC Ganesh temple under Bamebari police limits in Keonjhar district Sunday.
The death sparked tension in the area with the locals staging a road blockade to press for compensation for the bereaved family.
The deceased was identified as Akash Purty, 8. He was crossing the road when the heavy vehicle knocked him down.
Police rushed to the spot and tried to take his body in an ambulance, but locals opposed it. They demanded compensation from the owner of the dumper as the bereaved family is too poor. Locals demanded Rs 5.80 lakh for the family.
The dumper owner offered Rs 20,000, but locals refused to accept it. The agitation was on till the last report came in. A platoon of police force was deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
