Bhubaneswar: Odisha has received 5 per cent surplus rains this monsoon till date, the regional centre of India Meteorological Centre (IMD) said Monday.
According to the weather office here, the state received 1,056 millimetres of rainfall this monsoon against an expected 1,008 millimetres.
It may be noted here that the state had received 17.7 per cent deficit rainfall in the months of June and July, according to data from the office of Special Relief Commissioner (SRC). The state had received 457.7 mm rainfall against the average of 556.4 mm in those two months.
Heavy to very heavy rains in August and first week of September, however, changed the scenario and avoided a drought situation in the state.
The 17 districts that received deficit rains in June and July are Jharsuguda, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, Nuapada, Jajpur, Kandhamal, Bolangir, Boudh, Sambalpur, Kendrapara, Balasore, Gajapati, Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Angul, Mayurbhanj and Deogarh.
On average, the state experiences 15.4 rainy days in the month of July. There were, however, 13.7 rainy days in that month this year. In June 2019, there were 7.4 rainy days against the normal average of 9.9 days leading to a deficit rainfall of 31.5 per cent in June this year.
