Berhampur: A woman was killed near Berhampur railway station in Ganjam district Friday after she attempted to commit suicide by jumping before a moving train along with her two minor daughters.
The deceased, identified as Rama Bhanja, died on the post. Both her daughters, Riya (6) and Priya (11), have sustained critical injuries in the incident and have been hospitalised.
According to locals, the incident took place at about 6:00am in the morning.
Even though the exact circumstances under which Rama took to the extreme step is unclear, locals hinted at domestic violence angle. Many people said her husband Utsav Bhanja used to physically assault her.
Meanwhile, the family members of the deceased woman lodged a complaint with the cops in connection with the incident. The Government Railway Police (GRP) has taken over the case and is investigating the issue further. The accused husband has been detained for further questioning.
