After electing to bat first, Bengal batswomen struggled against some accurate bowling and were bundled out for a meager 123 in 49.4 overs. Tanushree Sarkar (33, 59b, 4×4) was the only player to offer some resistance with the bat.  Banalata Nayak (3/18) and Sushree (3/23) bowled well to snare three wickets each.

In reply, Orissa had a good start with the openers putting in 57 runs for the first wicket. Sasmita Mahalik (33,68b, 5×4) and Anjali Singh (28, 83b, 2×4) batted patiently. But after their departure, Orissa lost another couple of wickets in quick succession. But Sushree (27, 43b, 4×4) shone with the bat to script victory.

Brief scores: Bengal 123 in 49.4 overs (Tanusree Sarkar 33; Banalata Mallick 3/18, Sushree Pradhan 3/23) lost to Orissa 124/4 in 43.3 overs (Sasmita Mahalik 33, Anjali Singh 28, Sushree Pradhan 27) by six wickets.

Rutumbara Bidhar and Subhasis Barik bagged the title of the girls’ and the boys’ events respectively in the Orissa State Schools’ Chess Championship, which concluded at Janakalyan High School at Jajpur, Sunday.

In the girls’ segment, Rutumbara finished with six points to take the top honours. Sweata Senapati emerged runner-up with five points while Anantyoya Chatterjee finshed third with 4.5 points. In the boys’ category, Subhasis Barik emerged champion with six points. The second and third places were occupied by Srinibas Mishra (five) and Pranab Kumar Patra (4.5) respectively.

Orissa drub Chhattisgarh

Orissa continued their splendid form in the tournament by registering a thumping 58-0 win over a hapless Chhattisgarh in the All India Junior National Rugby Championships at the Kalinga Stadium here Sunday. This was the second consecutive victory of the hosts in as many matches.

Commendable show

Orissa players performed splendidly to bag four medals including one gold, one silver and two bronze medals in the Commonwealth Karate Championship, which concluded at the Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi, Sunday.

On the last day, Orissa players could not do much as Anupama Swain finished fifth in the women’s U-55 kg fighting category. Nihar Ranjan Swain also suffered a defeat in the second round of the boys’ U-21 fighting segment.
