Cuttack, Jan 4: The Sailabala Women’s College is all set to introduce vocational courses at the Plus III level from the 2015-16 academic session.
Students can enroll their names in the vocational courses after the University Grant Commission (UGC) gives its nod, according to college sources. The college would introduce vocational courses in agriculture, biotechnology, painting, office management and industrial management. However, UGC will take the final call on the number of seats in the courses.
Besides, Rashtriya Uchchatar Sikhya Abhiyan (RUSA) has earmarked `1 crore for the construction of a hostel on the college premises, work on which will begin soon, sources said. The state government has also decided to set up a new building that will be upgraded to a laboratory.
Students have been facing a lot of inconvenience because of the lack of infrastructure and shortage of teaching staff in the college. There are no professors for the post graduate courses in home science, Oriya, Sanskrit, political science and history. College principal Sanjukta Mohapatra said steps are being taken to boost manpower and improve infrastructure so that the college gets National Assessment and Accreditation Committee (NAAC) accreditation. Later, a proposal will be sent to the state government to accord university status to the college.
