Balasore: Four more inmates of Purubai Kanyashram in Balasore district were shifted to district headquarters hospital (DHH) here after their condition deteriorated due to Japanese encephalitis, a source said Tuesday.
The inmates were identified as Rakhi Santhara (7), Nandini Singh (15), Purnima Das (15), and Rakshi Singh (6).
According to the source, the above-mentioned inmates were first receiving treatment at Soro Community Health Center (CHC). However, due to further worsening of their ailments, the inmates were referred to Balasore DHH Monday.
Earlier, five students from the same Kanyashram tested positive for Japanese encephalitis Monday. Subsequently, they were sent to Balasore DHH along with two other inmates from the institution, the source added.
It can be mentioned here that initially three Kanyashram residents became seriously unwell after suffering from fever and were sent to Fakir Mohan Medical College & Hospital, Balasore (FMMCH) Friday for check-up.
Afterwards, 24 more students from the same institution were gripped by the disease and referred to Soro CHC with severe headaches and diarrhoea.
A Class X student, who was a resident of Dahanimara area in Nilagiri passed away Saturday while under medical care at FMMCH.
As many as 26 ailing inmates had their samples tested, and five of them tested positive for Japanese encephalitis.
Notably, Japanese encephalitis is caused by a virus spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. The disease may cause symptoms like brain swelling, headache, high fever and disorientation.
