Bhubaneswar: The state government has meticulously planned a grand celebration to mark the 77th Foundation Day of Bhubaneswar, scheduled for April 13 and 14. A high-level meeting, chaired by Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary Anu Garg, was held at Lok Seva Bhavan Wednesday to finalise arrangements and ensure seamless coordination among various departments.
During the meeting, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Rajesh Prabhakar Patil presented a detailed proposal outlining the schedule of events. The celebrations will feature a ceremonial flag hoisting, a civilian parade, cultural performances, and a range of competitions for students, making it a vibrant and engaging event for citizens.
Bhubaneswar, which was officially declared the Capital of Odisha April 13, 1948, completes 77 years this year. This milestone will be commemorated with special programmes aligned with the ongoing “Odia Paksha” (Odia Fortnight), which runs from April 1 to 14. Notable highlights of the festivities include “A Day for Odia Cuisine” April 13 and the observance of “Odia New Year” April 14, reflecting the City’s cultural essence. The celebrations will commence April 13 with a floral tribute at the foundation stone plaque near the Odisha Legislative Assembly, followed by a flag-hoisting ceremony led by the chief guest. A parade featuring student contingents and musical bands will march from Rabindra Mandap to Soochana Bhawan, adding grandeur to the occasion. In the evening, a cultural programme will be organised at Utkal Mandap, showcasing traditional Odia art and performances.

A significant highlight of this year’s event is a photo exhibition at Soochana Bhawan, displaying Bhubaneswar’s historical journey and evolution over the decades. Government and private buildings across the City will be illuminated, and statues of prominent figures will be cleaned and adorned with garlands as a tribute to their contributions. Authorities have also planned stringent traffic management measures to ensure a smooth flow of events. Senior officials from Tourism, Culture, Works, Higher Education, School & Mass Education, and police administration attended the preparatory meeting, emphasising a collective effort to make this year’s celebrations grander, inclusive, and culturally enriching for the people of Bhubaneswar.
