Paralakhemundi: Believe it or not, a woman in Gajapati district was declared dead in government records after receiving the first instalment under the state-sponsored Subhadra Yojana.
The woman was identified as Rajani Devi, 34, a resident of Jhami village under Paralakhemundi police limits in Gajapati district.
The matter came to the fore as Rajani approached the district administration after she was reportedly declared dead in official records despite being alive, and thereby, prevented from receiving the second instalment of benefits under the Subhadra Yojana.
Rajani has demanded a thorough investigation into the matter and appropriate corrective action from the administration. According to reports, Rajani had applied for the benefits under Subhadra Yojana and received the first instalment November 24, 2024. However, she faced a delay in receiving the second instalment and after a long wait, finally visited the nearest Jan Seva Kendra to check her status.

To her shock, Rajani discovered that she had been marked as ‘dead’ in the official database. Despite being alive, government records showed her as dead, disqualifying her from further benefits under the scheme. Finally, Rajani submitted a memorandum to the district administration, alleging that such errors were not limited to her case alone.
She claimed that many women in the district had been similarly affected and deprived of Subhadra Yojana benefits due to inaccuracies in government records.
She also pointed out other discrepancies in the system, stating that landless women had been shown as owners of five-acre plots and that some daily wage labourers were misrepresented as government employees in the scheme’s status documents.
