Gudvela: In a tragic incident at Chhendjad village under Gudvela block in Bolangir district, para-athlete Jogendra Chhatria (33) died late Saturday night at Burla Medical College, succumbing to injuries sustained in a stray dog attack.
Jogendra, who was unmarried, had represented Odisha and India in volleyball.
His family said he aspired to excel in the sport and bring glory to the nation. Another villager, Hrushikesh Rana (47), also died Sunday after being bitten by the same dog, while four others remain in critical condition and are receiving medical treatment.
According to reports, a stray dog attacked several residents of Chhendjad village July 23 including Keshab Nag, Meghnad Chhatria, Phul Chhatria, R. Rana, player Jogendra, and Hrushikesh, one after another.

All were admitted to a nearby health centre. As the condition of Jogendra and Hrushikesh worsened, they were first shifted to Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Bolangir, and later referred to Burla Hospital.
Jogendra was declared dead by doctors Saturday night. Hrushikesh was advised to be taken home without further treatment.
While being brought back, he died around 9:30am Sunday.
His last rites were performed in the village, while Jogendra’s cremation took place in Burla after post-mortem.
News of the two deaths has cast a pall of gloom over the village, with fear spreading among residents.
Villagers have demanded proper attention to ensure the recovery of the remaining injured.
