Champua/Joda: An elderly man was killed in a tusker attack in the wee hours of Sunday at Jodapokhari village under Champua forest range in Keonjhar district.
The victim was identified as Narottam Mohanta, 65 years old. Around 5 am, while heading out to answer the call of nature, he encountered the elephant on the road. The animal lifted him with its trunk, dashed him onto the ground and trampled him under its feet, police said.
As he did not return for long, his son Prashant Mohanta went looking for him when he found him lying unconscious near their house with chest injuries and saw elephant footprints nearby.
With the help of forest personnel, he was rushed to the Champua sub-divisional hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Champua police registered a case (46/25) and launched an investigation. The body was handed over to the family members after a post-mortem.
Woman critical in bear attack. In another incident of man-animal conflict, a woman was critically injured in a bear attack at Keratpadia village in Nilagiri block of Balasore district.
The victim has been identified as Kanak Swain, 44. While she had gone to the foothills of a nearby forest to relieve herself Sunday morning, she came across a bear.
The animal attacked her, leaving deep wounds on her head and left ear. Hearing her screams, villagers rushed to the spot, prompting the bear to retreat into the forest.
She was initially taken to Nilagiri Sub-divisional Hospital and later shifted to Balasore district headquarters hospital after her condition deteriorated.
