Bhubaneswar: Following allegations of a presidential candidate having criminal antecedents, the PG Council of Utkal University Sunday said it will seek suggestions from Advocate General (AG) regarding the aspirant.
A meeting in this regard was convened at the PG Council office here to discuss the matter.
“We discussed the issue with the candidates along with representatives of other student organisations, lawyers and vice-chancellor of the university. It was unanimously decided that we will seek the suggestion of the AG and based on his recommendation we will proceed further. But the election will be held in the campus as per schedule,” PG Council chairperson Ranjal Bal said after the meeting.
Officials attending the meeting said varsity authorities are most likely to seek AG’s suggestions Monday. Utkal University is going to hold students’ union poll this year Thursday.
Tension prevailed in the varsity campus Saturday after some students locked the main gate demanding arrest of a presidential candidate whose nomination was validated by the authorities despite his alleged criminal antecedents. The irate students had a scuffle with the security personnel as they tried to lock up the main gate.
Meanwhile, the student whose candidature in under the scanner accused his hi rivals of fomenting create tension in the varsity.
