Bhubaneswar, Jan 13: The official website of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here has dramatically vanished from the internet Tuesday triggering suspicion that the apex medical institute here is confronted with an identity crisis.
According to a local television channel’s Tuesday morning bulletin, the AIIMS unit in the city is on the verge of closure due to various problems including dearth of staff, inadequacies in infrastructure among other things ailing the institution.
Top AIIMS officials in the city, however, could not be contacted. No official was interested in discussing problems affecting the institution.
Its governing body has not been constituted for about a year. Even the institute’s executive and financial panels were not formed for reasons better known to authorities.
A few developmental works have been stymied for over a year. After the 2014 general elections, all the three committees have been dissolved leading to a total moratorium on recruitments and infrastructure.
Apart from the academics, many of the things including the peripheral hospital are not in good condition. Moreover, connectivity to the hospital is also an issue.
The apex institute has been inaugurated twice earlier. However, it was again scheduled to be re-inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India in December, 2014 but was apparently postponed to January 2015. There is however no news of when the re-inauguration is going to happen.
