Bhubaneswar, Jan 19: The sub-dean of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneswar, Monday lodged a complaint with Khandagiri police after he was assaulted for intervening in a clash between locals and students.
AIIMS sub-dean Dr Pravash Ranjan Mishra told Orissa POST a clash erupted between the students and a 100-strong mob of outsiders on the college premises. “When I tried to intervene, the outsiders thrashed me,” Mishra said.
The sub-dean suffered injuries to his face, which was swollen after the incident.
Canteen owner Abhishek Tripathy and another employee of the college were also assaulted by the mob.
Canteen manager PK Das who accompanied the trio to register a complaint at the Khandagiri police station, said some students regularly raise a ruckus at the canteen over trivial issues and misbehave with canteen staff.
“Some students come to the canteen in an inebriated state and misbehave with us,” said Das, adding the administration was helpless as the students are the children of powerful individuals.
A clash broke out Monday morning between the students and the canteen staff. A staffer who was assaulted by the students went to his native village Sijua and came back with a group of locals, who then started assaulting the students. The mob also vandalised the canteen.
The students too retaliated by pelting stones at the locals.
Police have said action will be taken against both the locals as well as the erring students.
