Bhubaneswar: Ama Bus services were disrupted Saturday as drivers from the Pokhariput depot staged a ‘steering down’ protest, demanding timely payment of salaries.
According to reports, over 43 buses remained idle at the Pokhariput depot as drivers refused duty, disrupting ‘Ama Bus’ services across the City and causing inconvenience to passengers.
Protesters alleged that delayed salaries were affecting their livelihood. Normally paid on the 7th and 11th of each month, they have not received wages for 42 days, prompting the demonstration.
“We have repeatedly demanded timely payment of our salaries, but even after assurances, this month’s wages are delayed. We won’t resume duty until pending and future salaries are assured,” said an agitated driver.
Another protester added, “We are constantly monitored while on duty, but the authorities must also ensure our salaries are paid on time, as we have families to support.”
The drivers also accused private contractor Chakra Transport of withholding their payments despite repeated assurances, saying the company has failed to address the ‘Ama Bus’ drivers’ grievances.
