Bhubaneswar, May 12: The state government Tuesday decided to introduce two-year professional Bachelor and masters degree courses in education (B.Ed and M.Ed) in 29 colleges and seven universities in 2016.
The decision on opening B.Ed and M.Ed courses was announced during a seminar attended by principals of colleges and vice-chancellors of universities across the state.
The decision may help aspiring teachers to pursue the two teacher education courses in their nearest colleges to be introduced from the academic session 2016-17.
The colleges chosen to launch the courses Sailabala Women’s College, Cuttack, BJB College, Bhubaneswar, SCS College, Puri, Khallikote College, Berhampur, Rajendra College, Bolangir, GM College, Sambalpur, FM College, Balasore and SG Women’s College, Rourkela among others.
The National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) has mandated an extension of the duration of one-year B.Ed and M.Ed courses to two academic years which requires the government to amend the teacher education process in the state.
The framework curriculum has been provided by the NCTE whereas the universities have the choice of choosing their own curriculum for the B.Ed and M.Ed courses. The institutions will also introduce integrated MA (Edn)-B.Ed and B.Ed-M.Ed courses.
The state has also decided to create a separate cadre for the faculties in teacher education streams for infusing greater professionalism and ensuring career progression. The teacher educators will not be scale-parallel with the cadre of general education.
