Bhubaneswar: The birth anniversary of Late Pandit Bhubaneswar Mishra was celebrated at Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi research center, in Bhubaneswar, Sunday. A group discussion and demonstration on ‘Lasya & Tandav in Sabdaswarapata with reference to Odissi and aesthetic study’ was also organised at the venue.
“Unsung and unglorified, Bhubaneswar Mishra had tirelessly worked to create music for works of the likes of Kelucharan Mohapatra, Sanjukta Panigrahi, Kumkum Mohanty and countless others who had also spent lifetimes in the service of Odissi dance. One can hardly imagine neo-classical dance without the continued support of its musical accompaniment and compositions. Choreography is incomplete without inspired music to lift it to great heights and the invaluable work of stalwarts such as Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and his disciples would have been incomplete without the masterly inspiration of the musical genius of yesteryear,” dance critic Sunil Kothari said.
CEO of GKCM research center Sangita Gosain said the vast body of music that Pt Bhubaneswar Mishra created continues to be used today in numerous dance performances. “Its brilliant creator has been forgotten almost completely and is remembered briefly and tentatively. He is known as the Badashah of Odissi music and he gave shape to Odissi dance,” Gosain said.
Later Guru Gajendra Panda gave a live dance performance on how Sabdaswarapata is used in Odissi dance as well as the use of tandav and Lasya. A group dance performance was also given by students of Tridhara.
Guests of honour were Sunil Kothari, dance critic; Santanu Rath, ex-station director of AIR; GKCM Research center CEO Sangita Gosian; Guru Sachidananda Das mardala exponent; sitarist Swapneswar Chakraborthy; Ileana Citaristi.
