Bhubaneswar: With a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team unable to rescue two persons trapped at Bariput stone quarry in Jeypore, the state government Tuesday roped in Indian Army to carry out the rescue operation.
State Labour Minister Sushant Singh said as the NDRF wasn’t able to carry out the rescue operation that was critical and required sophisticated equipment, the state government has appealed the Centre for military rescue.
A special team of army from Jharkhand has been dispatched for the rescue operation at the site where two workers – Ghanshyam Guru and Sanjay Das – are trapped from the past six days, he added. According to sources, May 31 evening, while excavating, both drivers of JCB machine got trapped under a heap of boulders along with their machines after the hill caved in.
NDRF, Orissa Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and several other technical teams were unable to clear the debris even with heavy machineries.
The engineers of Telingiri, upper Kolab and Indravati projects, who visited the accident site, also expressed their helplessness in removing the stones with the available machines and manpower.
