BCCI likely to do away with bio-bubbles in T20 series against South Africa

New Delhi: The BCCI in all likelihood will do away with bio-bubbles from the upcoming five-match T20 series against South Africa. The BCCI is mulling such a move keeping in mind the mental well-being of cricketers. Bio-bubbles became a part of the lives of cricketers with almost all the series (home and away). Matches were played in strict bio-secure environment due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The T20 series between India and South Africa will be played across five venues June 9 and 19. The venues are Delhi, Cuttack, Vizag, Rajkot and Bangalore.

The IPL is also being played in a bio-bubble for the safety of the players and the officials. It will end May 29. The BCCI does not want its players to move to another confined stay just after the conclusion of the league.

“If all goes well and things remain in control like it is right now, there will be no bio-bubbles and hard quarantine during the home series against South Africa,” a senior BCCI official said Monday on conditions of anonymity. “Then we are going to Ireland and England and there won’t be any bio-bubble in those countries too,” the BCCI added.

The board is aware that bubble life is not sustainable for long period. This is because staying confined to restricted areas can severely affect the players’ mental health.

“Some players have got periodic breaks. However, if you look at the bigger picture, living in bio-bubble one series after another and now two months of IPL is simply exhausting for the players,” he said.

In UK, there are no bio-bubbles as of now for any sporting activity. Hence the Indian team are expected to have a free environment in the country where they would play one Test and six white-ball games in a space of three weeks.

However it is understood that the players will be tested at regular intervals to ensure there are no positive cases within the group.

Workload management

The BCCI source also informed that an effective workload management programme is being prepared. It is being done so that all the stars including skipper Rohit Sharma, senior batters Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, keeper Rishabh Pant, pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami , spinner Ravindra Jadeja get adequate rest before jetting off to UK.

“There are five T20 Internationals from June 9 to 19 in five cities. Obviously, all the players won’t be playing all the games. Some might be given total rest and some might play a few games. If these guys aren’t given systemic breaks, it will only harm them. But obviously, the duration of break will be decided by selectors after talking to head coach (Rahul Dravid),” the source informed.

It will be interesting to see if Hardik Pandya – whose comeback is just a matter of time – will be picked for the Proteas series at home just after a gruelling IPL season or directly fielded in the T20I series in Ireland.
