Bikers with ‘extra vroom’ to face music

Cuttack: Noisy bikers better take note. You may face action from the traffic police if you have customised your two-wheeler engine to make it produce excessive sound, ostensibly to draw attention from others.

According to sources, noisy bikers are seen near College Chhak, CDA, Ring Road and many other places in the Silver City who take traffic rules for granted.

Police said that people get disturbed by the shrill sounds generated by bikers, and this has been the cause for several mishaps.

Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Akhilesvar Singh said, “The police will arrest bikers if their vehicles produce excessive sound.”

Traffic Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) PK Dalei said many cops have been deployed at various places in the city to look out for excessive noise-producing bikes.

The police are also keeping tabs on workshops which modify motorcycles to produce excessive sound. Last week, police found 10 to 12 mechanics, who were engaged in modifying bikes.

A bike mechanic, on condition of anonymity, said, “It’s mostly youths who visit us to get their bikes modified. We tell them not to do it as it drains out petrol and damages the engine.”

These kinds of modifications are very much in demand in cities like New Delhi and Mumbai, he added.

Bike mechanic Sheikh Razak said that he had learnt from YouTube and other sources how to modify bike engines.

A college student, who has modified his bike engine, said, “I had done the same after some of my friends went for the engine modification. But realising that the sound offends the public, I’ve done away with that.
