Shah must explain as to how the business turnover of his son grew 16,000 times within a year
Bhubaneswar: With a media report claiming that the turnover of a company owned by BJP chief Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah grew 16,000 times in a single year, the Congress and the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) trained their guns at the saffron camp asking the party to explain the “Shah model of business.”
Arch rivals Congress and BJD have joined hands to target the saffron party after news website ‘The Wire’ claimed that Temple Enterprise Private Ltd owned by Jay Shah saw an increase in its turnover from Rs 50,000 in 2014-15 to Rs 80 crore in 2015-16.
Hitting out at Amit Shah and the saffron camp, Orissa Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Prasad Harichandan said Amit Shah is directly involved in this issue. “The BJP chief, who frequently visits Orissa and other states and speaks at length against corruption, must explain as to how the business turnover of his son grew 16,000 times within a year,” Harichandan said.
Criticising Union Minister Pyush Goyal’s press conference in defense of Jay Shah, Harichandan questioned the locus standi of Jay Shah in the Central government.
“He (Jay Shah) has nothing to do with the government. However, a Union Minister defends him, for he is the son of BJP chief Amit Shah and their party is power,” he said.
Alleging that individuals like Jay and others associated with the BJP are the main beneficiaries of demonetisation, Harichandan questioned how the Income Tax department, Enforcement Directorate or CBI failed to notice Jay Shah’s phenomenal growth at a time when the Centre was claiming to crack down on shell companies post demonetisation.
Harichandan, who asked Shah and BJP leaders to explain “the Shah model of business” said the Congress has demanded a judicial probe into the case. “We have demanded a probe into the case under the supervision of two Supreme Court judges,” he said.
The BJD also took potshots at Shah and the BJP government at the Centre over the issue. “The BJP must come up with a clarification on the issue,” BJD spokesperson Sashmit Patra said, adding, “The matter be probed by ED, CBI or a similar agency.’’
Meanwhile, BJD vice-president and minister Damodar Rout, who termed Amit Shah as a ‘gambler’ said the probe will hardly have any effect.
Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Sajjan Sharma said his party has already issued a clarification and has decided to file a criminal case against such ‘defamatory and malicious’ report.
