Bhubaneswar: A day after rejecting allegations of irregularities in election funding telecast on a national media, the ruling Biju Janata Dal Saturday said it is mulling legal action against those trying to tarnish the party image.
“The BJP and a media house are trying, in vain, to mislead people on BJD’s election expenses by distorting facts,” said a BJD statement signed by party’s general secretary Bijay Nayak. “The allegations are false and we will take legal recourse against those who are conspiring to defame the party,” the statement added.
The ruling party has been mulling legal action against the Congress and BJP although the Delhi High Court recently sought details of illegal funding they received from abroad.
The BJD reaction came in the wake of state BJP’s threat to initiate investigation by Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax authorities into BJD’s poll expenditure.
BJD treasurer Subash Singh, meanwhile, said, “BJP has been trying to defame BJD. The allegations against our party are baseless as all our transactions are done on a transparent manner.”
Earlier in the day, the BJD spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Pratap Keshari Deb said this is ‘‘a calculated political vendetta and an attempt to tarnish the image of the Chief Minister.”
