Bhubaneswar: Amid growing concerns over the safety of women and students in Odisha, members of the Biju Chhatra and Yuva Janata Dal staged protest marches and submitted memoranda at several police stations across the twin city Saturday.
The demonstrations were part of a weeklong agitation demanding justice for a student of FM (Autonomous) College and calling for stricter measures to safeguard girls and women.
The protesters accused the BJP-led state government of failing to ensure women’s safety and criticised the worsening law and order situation.
They pointed out that in the past 13 months, several high-profile cases of violence against women have occurred, raising serious concerns about governance and public security.
In the Capital city, the agitators marched from Utkal University to the DCP office, where they held a demonstration and submitted a memorandum highlighting their demands.
BCJD state vice president Arup Srichandan said, “The law and order situation in the state is deteriorating.
Crimes against women are on the rise, yet the government remains focused on making tall claims instead of taking real action.
We demand concrete measures to ensure the safety of women in the state. If the government fails to respond, we will intensify our protest in the coming days.”
Similarly, student activists from BJD’s units at Cuttack’s Shailabala Women’s College and Indira Gandhi Women’s College submitted memoranda at multiple police stations, seeking justice for the Balasore victim.
