BLOGGING: A NEW RAGE AMONG YOUTH

Bhubaneswar: Initially developed as a form of journal, blogging has become another way to mint money for today’s tech-savvy youth.

Many people are still confused over what constitutes a blog over a website and struggling to find that Chinese wall which separates or distinguishes them. Part of the problem is that many businesses use both, integrating them into a single web presence.

In the blogging world there are different types of blogs namely personal blogs, business blogs, professional blogs and, niche blogs and several others. Not only one can hone his/her writing skills creating contents in the blog but earn by placing ads on their site or by including affiliated links in their contents or also through using the blog as a content marketing tool for businesses.

Orissa POST interacted with some of the city-based bloggers who blog about lifestyle, fashion and, makeup and food.

Meet Luma Rath and Leesha Rath, a sister duo, who has redefined lifestyle blogging with finesse.Born to Prashant and Rajlaxmi Rath and belonging to a business family, Luma and Leesha decided to step into the world of lifestyle blogging “as they find it pretty interesting”. With more than ten thousand followers in both Instagram and Twitter, the sisters also run a website. For the sister duo blogging is fun and inspiring. A gleeful Leesha said, “I think everybody wants to look cool and we just help them out. Moreover, it’s a nice way to earn even.”  It may be mentioned here that brands like Adidas, Big Bazaar and various fitness groups have associated with the Rath sisters for promotion of their products.

Pramita Mohapatra, another fashion blogger, who in her blog Brunette Waves writes about modern fashion and how brand value matters, said, “It is imperative for the modern-day youth to have a sense of fashion and not to confuse it with brand value.” She added that the millennial “seldom mind to burn a hole in their pocket to look good.”  Pramita who currently earns upto Rs 40,000 per month, highlighted that blogging not only helped her realise her passion for writing but in that process she became an earner too. “Indubitably it’s one of the best ways to stay alive in the social media world,” she added.

Another genre of blogging which is gaining in popularity is parenting blogging and Namrata Giri Patra is one of those bloggers. She pointed out that she comfortably earns around Rs 12,000 monthly. “Parenting is unequivocally a Herculean task and it’s also pestering for anyone to call somebody for advices. That’s why I thought that I should help the first-time parents,” she said. However, Namrata has diversified her blog by writing about office fashion and how it is related to the employee’s performance. “Many have this notion in their minds that fashion has nothing to do at workplaces but psychology has proved that the way you dress up at your workplaces affects your performances,” she underlined. She opined that brand is “only to assert oneself” but fashion is something that “grabs the eyeballs.” “If you can carry yourself wearing something from the flea market, that can become fashion but the same cannot be said for brands,” she added. When asked about how many days it took to complete a blog, Namrata replied, “It can be a day or even be more than a month, it depends on what you are writing.”

For Rohit Srivastav who runs a food blogging site feels that blogging is one of the entertaining ways for earning. “Give 3-4 hours daily, stay in touch with the taste of youth and you can earn at least say Rs 10,000 per month,” he said. Srivastav who himself claimed to earn somewhere between Rs 30,000 and 40, 000 said, “This new rage is gripping the youth and I am enjoying it and making money too (chuckled).”
