Cuttack, May 31:Non-availability of blood for the last few days at the SCB Medical College and Hospital Blood Bank and the Central Red Cross Blood Bank has severely affected patients and their attendants.
Authorities of both blood banks blamed the heatwave in the state for the shortage of blood.
“We have not witnessed such blood shortage in the last three decades. The prevailing heatwave condition has prevented the organisation of blood donation camps in state,” said SCB Medical College and Hospital Blood Bank technician in-charge KC Tripathy.
The SCB blood bank requires at least 50 units of blood every day, according to sources. However, only eight to 10 units of blood are available at the blood bank every day, according to sources.
SCB authorities have organised two blood donation camps over the last two days to arrange blood for patients.
The Red Cross blood bank in the city requires 100 units of blood every day but is unable to meet this target for the last few days.
Benudhar Satpathy, the director of Central Red Cross blood bank, recently sought the help of Red Cross state unit secretary Chakradhar Panda to arrange blood donation camps.
