Chester-le-Street (UK): West Indies captain Carlos Brathwaite (3/20) helped his side register an emphatic 21-run win over England in the one off T20I, Saturday.
England, set 177 for victory, were bowled out for 155 at a chilly and rain-swept Riverside. Brathwaite, in his only match of the tour as he was not selected for the Tests or ODIs, was brilliant with the ball.
Jerome Taylor (1/40) dismissed Jason Roy on the first ball of England’s reply. Alex Hales (43, 17b, 8×4, 1×6) played a blinder before being removed by Brathwaite. Hales’s exit was the start of a slump that saw England lose three wickets for four runs as 64 for one soon became 68 for four.
However, Jos Buttler (30, 27b, 2×4) and Jonny Bairstow (27, 21b, 1×4, 1×6) added 50 runs for the fifth wicket before England losing wickets at regular intervals to be dismissed with three balls to spare. Despite Brathwaite’s wonderful spell, Sunil Narine (2/15) was chosen man of the match following his economical spell.
Earlier, West Indies made 176 for nine. Openers Chris Gayle (40, 21b, 3×4, 4×6) and Evin Lewis (51, 28b, 6×4, 3×6) got the tourists off to a flying start, putting on 77 inside seven overs after Morgan invited the visitors to bat. Pacer Liam Plunkett (3/27) and leg-spinner Adil Rashid (3/25) kept West Indies to under 200.
Brief scores:
West Indies 176/9 (Evin Lewis 51; Adil Rashid 3/25) bt England 156 in 19.3 overs (Alex Hales 43; Carlos Brathwaite 3/20) by 21 runs.
Spectators injured
Three spectators suffered injuries, and a further 200 had to be moved to another part of the ground, following the partial collapse of a temporary stand at the Emirates Riverside during the T20I between England and West Indies. The incident took place midway during England’s innings, in the north-east corner of the ground. A statement from Durham County Cricket Club read: “Three spectators were injured when a small section of the North-East Terrace flooring became unstable causing them to fall. Stewards took precautionary action and evacuated that area of the stand efficiently.”
