Chandahandi: Two men, on their own, had to carry their sister’s body on a bicycle to the cremation ground Saturday as none of the villagers came forward to shoulder the corpse. The incident took place in Madigaon village that comes under Gambhariguda panchayat of Chandahandi block in Nabarangpur district.
The deceased, identified as Nuankhai Pandey, had been living with her two brothers-Tekaram Pandey and Purusottam Pandey in Madigaon village. The 42 years old separated woman had been not keeping well for last couple of months. She breathed her last Friday, said a source.
None of the villagers, nor did any relative turn up for the last rites till Saturday morning. Finding no way out, the two brothers tied their sister’s corpse to the bier, wrapped it in clothes, then tied it to the bicycle carrier and carried it to nearby Bhandari river where it was cremated.
A source suggested that the relatives and the fellow villagers boycotted her cremation and last rites owing to a family dispute.
