Cuttack: The young Canadian national who was detained by police in Puri recently on charges of trespassing on a primary school is now under treatment at Sriram Chandra Bhanj Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) here for a mental disorder he is suffering from.
SCBMCH sources said Guru Dayal Singh, who hails from Toronto in Canada, is suffering from “partial mental disorder”. Sarada Prasanna Swain, a doctor attending on him, claimed that the Canadian national had been consuming bhang for many days.
“Singh was referred to the mental ward by the authorities of Puri district headquarters hospital (DHH) February 6. His condition is improving day by day,” Swain said.
According to sources, SCBMCH authorities have contacted the Canadian embassy in New Delhi to apprise officials there of Singh’s hospitalisation. SCBMCH authorities have also discussed Singh’s health issues with his parents. A police official is guarding Singh at the hospital at present.
The Canadian national had illegally entered a classroom of Nuanai Primary School at Beladala in Puri February 5, said sources. He had then tried to teach the pupils of the school despite strong objection from the headmistress.
On being informed, marine police in Puri had detained him and sent him for medical examination at the DHH. PNN
