Jharsuguda: A woman and her minor son were killed while her husband and a nine-month-old son had a close shave after they were hit by an over-speeding vehicle while they were crossing the road at Biju Patnaik square here Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Sujata Buda (26) and Suraj Buda (7). The injured were Sujata’s husband Ishwar Buda and their nine-month-old son.
The incident sparked tension in the area as angry locals thrashed the car driver and handed him over to police.
The bodies were sent for autopsy. Police seized the car and started a probe.
Sources said, the incident occurred while the family was crossing the main road near Biju Patnaik square. An over-speeding car rammed into Sujata and her elder son Suraj, leading to their death on the spot while Ishwar who was carrying the baby boy escaped with minor injuries.
Demanding compensation for the family, angry locals placed the bodies on the road and blocked it. SDPO Kailash Acharya, IIC Amitabh Panda and other officials reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
The agitators relented after the officials assured them of paying compensation to the kin of the deceased.
