New Delhi: Orissa’s capital Bhubaneswar will have Business Processing Outsourcing (BPOs) units in the near future. The Union electronics and information technology ministry will assist the state government in setting up BPOs as part of Digital India Mission.
“The Centre has planned to incentivise BPO employment in smaller towns and have these centres at more cities in the country. For the same, it has chosen Bhubaneswar besides other small cities in 18 states,” said electronics and information technology minister Ravi Shankar Prasad at the economic editors conference in New Delhi.
According to the ministry 10,270 seats have been allocated under the BPO scheme to these cities resulting in nearly 3000 direct and indirect jobs.
The ministry claims major groups like TCS, Amazon, Karvy Data and others are likely to open BPOs in smaller towns.
Prasad also said the Centre plans to open four Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) in four districts in Orissa. “We have planned to open new STPI centres in 8 cities in next two years. These include four centres namely-Angul, Jajpur, Koraput and Sambalpur among other cities and states where the project will be executed.”
When Orissa POST asked what steps will be taken under the Accessible India Campaign to make Orissa government websites disabled-friendly, he said, “We will speak to the Orissa government at the secretary level to ensure the websites are disabled-friendly. We are committed to make government websites disabled-friendly.”
The minister also boasted about his ministry’s plans of transforming Indian through digital initiatives including making online appointments in government hospitals, providing government support through common service centres among others. He also claimed that by the end of 2016, the country is likely to have 500 million internet users compared to 302 million users in 2014.
