Bhubaneswar, Jan 8: The Government of India has approved setting up of 6,000 model schools across the country with a view to have one model school in each block.
About 3,500 will be set up by the government while the other 2,500 will be commissioned in public private partnership mode.
The government has approved the setting up of 2,490 model schools in 23 states and union territories in the first phase for which it has sanctioned a sum of Rs 3725.60 crore to build 2,329 model schools in 23 states.
According to sources, there are about 1,087 model schools functioning in 12 states. The ministry of human resource development has further decided to look into the setting up of other model schools in collaboration with the industry giants. The MHRD has further proposed to set up 54 new central schools in the coming academic year.
Moreover, students from Class I to VIII of government, aided and other schools coming under the Sarva Sikhya Abhiyan have been included under the Mid-Day Meal scheme (MDM). The government has also sanctioned a sum of Rs 13,125 crore for the MDM project this academic year. About 11 crore children have benefited through MDM in 2013-14.
Moreover, under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Sikhya Abhiyan, there are also provisions for building extra classrooms, laboratories, toilets, libraries and drinking water facilities in every school. About 10,513 new schools have been included in the scheme this year.
