Bhubaneswar, Jan 9: After maintaining silence for several days, housing and urban development department authorities Friday woke up from slumber and asked officials concerned to check water quality of high-rises and slum clusters to check jaundice menace.
H&UD minister Pushpendra Singh Deo and secretary G Mathivathanan held a review with Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena at Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) Friday in this regard.
Deo asked the officials to engage private labs to check water quality of potable water being supplied to private and government owned multi-storied structures in the city.
He also directed officials to prepare a comprehensive data of high-rise buildings in the city within three months and ensure cleanliness in underground and overhead water tanks for pure potable water supply.
Public health engineering organisation (PHEO) officials have been asked not to adopt callous attitude and thoroughly check water quality before supplying it to the residents.
Meanwhile, Jena informed the minister that the city has 436 slums —199 of which have water connections— where quality needs to be monitored.
Municipal commissioner Krishan Kumar said the slums which do not have water connections will get water stand-posts for every 50 persons.
A total of six tube-well pumps in the city were sealed by the PHEO officials who felt the water sources were contaminated.
