Jeypore, Feb 9: A day after reports of a class-VI girl student of Umuri Ashram School delivering a baby boy in the hostel were published in the media, the district child welfare committee Monday began an inquiry into the incident.
The committee members went to the school and held talks with its lone teacher Ajit Kumar Panda about the matter.
According to reports, the minor girl had delivered the baby late Thursday night. Though she had complained of pain in the abdomen and told the school authorities about it, the latter did not make any arrangements to provide her treatment.
The school authorities instead sent the girl along with her baby to her house in a hired four-wheeler without bringing the incident to the notice of their higher-ups. After the matter came to light, Jeypore block welfare officer Annapurna Devi along with another official went to the school Saturday and conducted an inquiry into the matter. Devi later lodged a complaint regarding the incident with the police. School headmaster Kailash Chandra Brahma and hostel assistant superintendent Sabita Guru were then arrested for dereliction of duty and on other charges.
The administration also took immediate action against both the teachers by suspending them. They were forwarded to a court Monday.
