City celebrates National Library Day

Bhubaneswar: The National Library Day was celebrated as Librarian’s Day at Institute of Hotel Management, VSS Nagar in the city here Sunday.

It may be mentioned here that the day is celebrated marking the birthday of professor of library science Late Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan, who had spearheaded the development of library in the country.

Principal Secretary of Odia language, literature and culture department Manoranjan Panigrahi presided over the event and deliberated on the importance of libraries.

“Libraries, where knowledge is worshipped, are no less than temples. It’s our duty to preserve the library culture,” he said.

The keynote address was delivered by retired Professor Pitambar Padhi, who stressed on the need to prepare a blueprint for the development of library in the state. He said, “The state government should approve the blueprint which the Odisha library committee is preparing.”

Likewise, the day was celebrated at the State Archives here by Odisha college library association. The programme was attended by Bhubaneswar North MLA Priyadarshi Mishra who emphasised on the role of librarians and called them “guardians of knowledge”.
