Coop bank’s NPA burden on rise

Inaction against big defaulters and focus on loan recovery from small traders and farmers lead to discontent among locals

Keonjhar: The Keonjhar Central Cooperative Bank (KCCB) has allegedly adopted dillydallying tactics in the matter of recovering loans from defaulters while the bank authorities only lay focus on loan recovery from small traders and farmers. This has led to discontent among the locals.

Besides, non-recovery of loans has added to it NPA with the bank’s condition deteriorating day by day, a report said.

Locals alleged that some rich people have got away with loans, but the authorities do not take action against them.

Reports said the bank has issued notification to 20 defaulters. But its work has been confined to pasting the information on its wall. Among the 20 defaulters are influential leaders, industrialists and traders.

Loans to the tune of Rs 9.50 crore are pending against them, but it is unfortunate that no action has been taken against the defaulters, said Kirtan Bihari Jena, a member of the Navnirman Krushak Sangathan.

Farmers affiliated to this outfit sought to know how the bank authorities provided such a huge amount of loans to influential people.

It was also alleged that in some cases, people have even taken loans without furnishing necessary documents.

In case of loan default, the bank authorities should start criminal proceedings against the defaulter, but here they are shown favourtism, it was alleged.

Sarthak Minerals has topped the list of defaulters with a loan of about Rs 3.65 crore pending on it. The firm has a limestone crushing unit at Anjar under Bansapal block. Riazuddin Ahmed, Sayed Merajul Amin, Sk Abraul Haque and Bijaylaxmi Patnaik are in the board of directors of the company, according to the information board.

The next in the list is the name of Munir Mohanty of M/S Bilati Odihsa in Gopalpur.

Bilati Odisha has to pay off 1.98 crore. Some have taken loans for truck and others have taken for buildings.

KCCB president Kanan Bihari Mohanty said legal action is being taken against the defaulters and if necessary, steps will be taken to confiscate their properties.
