Couple killed for ‘honour’: Koraput cops

Koraput: Local police Tuesday made shocking revelations regarding the deaths of a couple in the district. Parshuram Muduli and Dhanamati Muduli, whose bodies were found on a railway track at Kotpad June 21, were killed by the girl’s father, brother and their three associates, police said.
Earlier, it was suspected that the couple had committed suicide by jumping before a moving train. However, a police investigation revealed that both had been killed by the girl’s father Meta Muduli, her brother Pitabas Muduli and their associates Krushna Muduli, Kamala Lochan Muduli and Manabodha Muduli.
While Parshuram was hacked to death, Dhanamati was strangled by the accused with her ‘dupatta’. In a bid to give the crime a colour of suicide, the accused dumped the bodies on the railway track, the police said.
Surprisingly, Meta had lodged a complaint with the police alleging that his daughter was murdered. Suspecting foul play in his statement, the police interrogated him and four other suspects, following which the accused confessed to their crime, the police said.
“Prima facie, it appears to be a case of honour killing. The family members of the girl were opposing the couple’s relationship, as a result of which the duo decided to elope. After learning their intentions, the accused eliminated the two. The accused will be produced in court,” said Koraput SP Kanwar Vishal Singh.
