Bhubaneswar, Jan 19: In a heartwarming tale of compassion, a couple from West Bengal spent a cold Sunday night in the open with an injured bull along the Cuttack-Puri road after they failed to get help in shifting the animal to a veterinary facility.
They took the bull to Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) Monday morning, where the animal is now recuperating.
Sources said Shyam and Madhavi Mitra were driving to Hyderabad when they took a wrong turn towards Bomikhal from Rasulgarh square.
When they reached Bomikhal Square at around 1.20am, they saw the bull writhing in pain on the roadside. Bystanders said a speeding truck had hit the stray bull. The couple got down from the car and requested locals to help them treat the animal, but no help was forthcoming.
Shyam asked Madhavi to stay near the bull and went to nearby Kochilei Haat to fetch water. The bull started shivering after they poured water on its wounds. The couple again requested onlookers and passers-by to help make arrangements to shift the bull to a hospital and even assured them of monetary help. All their pleas went in vain.
The couple then covered the bull with their blankets and contacted the police control room, veterinary hospital and the city mayor for help.
A PCR van from Sahid Nagar and Laxmisagar police station arrived at the spot late in the night and took Shyam to a veterinary hospital in a PCR van. However, shifting the bull at the late hour was not possible.
The couple then decided to spend the night near the injured bull and waited till morning to shift it to OUAT’s veterinary hospital.
The couple managed to shift the bull to OUAT at 11 am where the bull was operated upon. The couple was still in the city till last reports came in. Sources said the bull is now safe.
