Cuttack residents to pay fee for roadside parking

Cuttack, Jan 20: Come February and residents of the silver city, who have been parking their vehicles free of cost on the roadside, will have to pay a parking fee on an hourly basis.

The decision has been taken by the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) in view of traffic congestion. It will be first implemented on the Naya Sarak stretch within a month, said CMC sources. Several commuters use the Naya Sarak road on a daily basis to travel towards Balubazar, Dagarpada, Nimchouri and Sheikh Bazaar. The road also acts as a connecting link between Choudhry Bazaar and High Court. While parking provision on one side was introduced at Naya Sarak in 2011, vehicles can be found parked on both sides of the road here round-the-clock that leads to traffic jams.

CMC commissioner Gyana Ranjan Das admitted traffic congestion at Naya Sarak is a serious problem. “We believe if people will be charged for parking their vehicles, they will vacate the parking space quickly,” Das said. He added a notification has already been published for the auction of Naya Sarak parking place. “Once the agency is finalised, the parking fee will be decided,” added Das.
