Cuttack, May 30: Armed dacoits allegedly looted the house of retired Orissa High Court judge Pradyumna Kumar Mohanty in sector 11 of the CDA area here in the wee hours of Saturday.
Mohanty is currently heading the Judicial Commission of Enquiry probing the Pipli
gangrape and murder of 2012.
The dacoits tied Mohanty, his wife and daughter-in-law in a room. They then broke open cupboards and decamped with cash and jewellery worth more than `50 lakh, police said. The dacoits escaped with Mohanty’s car, which was later traced near Rasulgarh, in Bhubaneswar, police said.
“More than seven to eight persons entered my bedroom around 3.15 am and woke me up demanding cash and jewellery in the house pointing knives at me. When my wife woke up, they tied our hands and legs threatening us at gunpoint not to make any noise. Enquiring about other members in the house, they brought our ailing daughter-in-law from the first floor and also held her under captive in our room,” the 70-year-old Mohanty said.
The dacoits were speaking in Hindi, Bengali and Oriya, he said.
The police have detained the domestic help and are quizzing him, said city DCP Sanjib Arora.
“We have formed four teams to investigate the case and are hopeful of cracking it soon,” Arora said.
Director general of police Sanjeev Marik and police commissioner RP Sharma visited the spot.
