Delhi hospital detains Oriya youth’s body

Basudevpur: A Delhi-based hospital has detained the body of a Oriya youth, who died two days ago during treatment, demanding `1.5 lakh towards medical expenditure from the relatives of the deceased, a report said.

Even as the incident has sent shockwaves across Basudevpur area in Bhadrak district, the youth’s family members Sunday appealed to the district administration to bring back the body.

According to reports, Manas Ranjan Mohanty (20), son of Bhagirathi Mohanty, of Bhirabpur under Basudevpur municipality, was a student of Plus-III Commerce in BNMA Mahavidyalaya at Paliabindha under Tihidi block. A few days ago, Manas fell ill and was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. He was later shifted to a hospital in Bangalore but his condition did not improve.

Manas was then taken to Delhi but his family members couldn’t admit him to the All India Institute of Medical Science. He was admitted to Maharaj Ugrasen Hospital in Punjab Bagh where he died Saturday after an operation.

Despite financial constraints, his family had spent `3 lakh at the hospital for his treatment, but the hospital authorities demanded `1.5 lakh more towards medical cost. The authorities refused to hand over the body until the amount was paid. Completely broke, the family reportedly took up the matter with the revenue minister of Orissa, Bhadrak MP, Cuttack MP and Union ministers representing Orissa. But, it was learnt that no steps have been taken for recovering the body from the hospital.

Meanwhile, his father Bhagirathi and mother Kamala urged Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to immediately talk to the Delhi government so that the body of their son can be brought to the state, it was learnt.
Locals have demanded the intervention of the district administration in this issue.  PNN
