Diarrhoea claims class IV girl; over 100 school kids ill

Bissamcuttack: Panic gripped Nalini Vidya Mandir, a residential school in Bissamcuttack block of Rayagada district, after a Class IV girl student died during treatment following an outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting which affected more than 100 students, sources said Saturday.

Over 40 affected students were admitted to the Bissamcuttack Community Health Centre (CHC), while six critically ill were shifted by ambulance for advanced medical care.

Around 50 to 60 students were provided emergency treatment on the school premises by local doctors. Preliminary reports suggest that the outbreak may have been caused by contaminated food or drinking water.

A special medical team from the Rayagada district Health department rushed to the spot and began treatment and assessment. Samples of food and drinking water from the school have been collected and sent for laboratory examination. Following the incident, tension and anxiety prevailed in the area, with concerned parents gathering at the school and health facilities.
